Very fun idea and I love the design of the book (now if only I could keep up with it!).
This December I will have finished filling this journal. I will cherish this book for a long time. It just so happeing that I started out this journal lonely, depressed and heartsick. In the five years afterward I met a wonderful man, became friends, dated, fell in love, got engaged and I'm filling out this year's entries as a happily married woman who is kicking depression's butt. I got to capture all those changes in my life in this journal!I have a few criticisms. Some of the questions are dumb, repetitive, boring to answer, or confusing. However, you will get that with any journal that is attempting to come up with 365 unique questions. A lot of the questions are good, interesting and/or thought provoking. So it is overall a good little journal. :)
I just completed my journal yesterday, so I decided to write a review about my experience. For starters, I personally like that the book is small with very few lines for responding, because that forced me to be concise, yet thorough-- to answer each question with gut-instinct honesty, rather than over-thinking my responses. As a result, I have a journal that serves as a 5-yr self-study with valuable evidence of my growth, plateaus, and regressions. It's been wonderful to read see how I got over something or someone I thought I'd NEVER get over, because I now have a written reminder that wounds heal and that "this too shall pass". It's been educational to see the things I've remained firm and unyielding about, because I now have a clearer sense of my value system and authenticity (i.e. what makes me, ME). It's been uncomfortable to see how I didn't grow/improve I in the ways I've needed to, or how certain situations in my life didn't change or turn out as I'd hoped they would. But seeing those realities scattered throughout the journal is helping me realize what I can control and what I can't. And those revelations are motivating to step up and work harder where I do have control, and to finally let go of what I can't.Yes, there are some silly questions in here and some that don't lead to greater self-awareness or life-changing epiphanies, but I appreciated the variety, because I think I would have found it difficult to answer a deep or self-analytical question every single day. Besides, even some of the trivial questions helped me see how I've matured over the years. So, if you want a quick and easy way to track your personal development, I think this would be a worthwhile I investment. I've already ordered a new one to start on my upcoming birthday-- so in 2021 I'll have a 10yr self-study.
I got this because I was considering starting a journal and wanted something simple to see how it went. I will have had this little book two years in November and after one year was complete I discovered why it is so good. The first year the questions are new - some are fun and frivolous and others really make you think. There are only four short lines to write your answer so there is no pressure to come up with an essay, but by the same token, you have to shorten what could be a long answer into something tight and to the point. The second year can be an eye-opener when you read last year's answers and realize how much things, circumstances, or you yourself have changed - and how others have stayed exactly the same. Some of these can push you to change things - for example: one question asked what I most wanted to buy and my answer was a Jeep Wrangler. This year my answer was the same and I was shocked at how long I had had the same wish, time can just get away from you. Anyway, I made a concerted effort to find the Jeep I wanted at a price I could afford and bought it. (love it)It's simple, short and often fun, but it can bring back memories, good and bad, and it can certainly make you think.
I keep a journal - a large, free-form, sprawling journal - but I've always liked the idea of having a journal in which I wrote one or two sentences for every day and did so consistently for a period of time. THIS is exactly what I'd been thinking of. Normally, I don't like small journals. I want something big so I can write and not feel cramped. But this is a small one - and I like it. A lot. It's small enough to fit in my purse, and given the purpose of this book, that's awesome. For something like this, you WANT something small enough to fit in your bag so that when you've got a few minutes, you can pull it out, write in it, and stick it back in. For me, I can discreetly pull this out while I'm killing time in court (we're not allowed to read books or fool around on our iPads as we wait for the judge to take the bench), and write a few sentences and stick it right back in my briefcase. People just assume that it's a little personal diary and I'm writing a grocery list or something. It's innocuous but more importantly, very convenient.Plus, it's lovely. It has gilded pages, and I think they're so pretty. I have no idea how well they will hold up over the years, but I don't really care. They're pretty now and even if they fade a little, so what?I noticed that many of the other reviews complain that the binding is tight and makes it hard to write in the middle pages of this book. I can offer some help with that issue. It's probably true that the binding is a bit tight. This is what you should do with ANY book where the binding is tight:1. Hold the book so that it rests on its spine. Rest it on the table on the spine.2. Let the front cover fall open, and down. Press it down a little, gently, so that it lies flat on the table.3. Do the same with the back cover.4. When both the front and back cover are flat on the table, with the pages pointing up, then take a few pages from the front and gently press them down to rest on the front cover.5. Take a few pages from the back and gently press them down to rest on the back cover.6. Keep doing this until you get to the middle of the book and all the pages are resting flat. This is the best way to loosen the binding gently, without damaging or breaking it. This is exactly what I did when I first got this journal. I loosened the binding gently so that I coudl use it and have not had any trouble writing it. If you are too rough with it, you risk damaging the binding or breaking it, which you don't want to do. Just follow my instructions and you'll loosen it properly, and be able to enjoy this journal for a long time.
