A good volume for your library and also for beginners or to remind more experts if they get a little "rusty"
Right in the books description it states "This comprehensive guide to American Sign Language..." do not be fooled by this! It is some hybrid form of SEE (Signed Exact English), AL and who knows what. If you want to learn proper ASL and use this book to study it, you'll be disappointed. I'm sure those that are deaf will still be happy you are trying to learn to talk to them on their terms but if you are taking a college course on ASL, the teacher will have no qualms about correcting you or failing you for the wrong signs. If you are learning ASL and want to see the SEE variation, this book is good example. I've given it 2 stars for its information, layout and completeness for SEE but couldn't give it the full 5 as the description is misleading. If they change the description to state it is not ASL but SEE, I will change my review to 5 stars.
My own fault for not reading the description closely enough, but be advised that this is Signed English not American Sign Language.That said the drawings are fairly clear and it looks like a reasonably helpful book if Signed English is your goal.
This is one of the best sign language books I have ever read. I've seen several and movies also and this one cuts to the chase and shows direction and provides additional insight. I had a temporary hearing loss and this helped me during that time. This is my second purchase of this book as I found it so easy I passed it on to other family members who have an aphasia family member.I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who would like to learn the basic day to day sign language
This is the first book I have purchased (and I have about half a dozen books on sign language) that actually gives the learner practice in READING signs. I also like the notes at the bottom of the page that serve as a kind of thesaurus (other words that are signed in the same or almost the same way). I highly recommend this book to people who are learning sign language.
I'm teaching myself sign language and this is probably the best thing I could have bought for myself. The workbook style makes learning so much easier.
There is a group of three of us with one whose ASL need will be of extreme importance in years coming. He is called a "highly functioning autistic" working with "coach" for developmentally challenged. He has two cochlea implants. Whatever the level, this book is well illustrated, attractive and leads in steps with review pages of materials covered in each chapter. I have worked with another book that had been the best for years. This book makes learning ASL fun.
This book has well drawn diagrams to show you how to sign the words, and my deaf friend said she likes the approach of this as well. It's easy to understand and it even has quizzes and challenges.
Great resource. In addition to my course material (actually in place of) I am using Signing Made Easy. I have a few ASL instructional manuals and I am happy to have this as a reference. Even though I have several other illustrated ASL books this one has a lot of different signs that are not included in the other material. It is always a good idea to have more than one ASL dictionary type books as all of them don't have the same signs. Because this book also includes information on deaf culture it makes interactions within this community a little easier for me (a hearing person) to understand.
