As a ministry worker, raising support can be a daunting task. It doesn't have to be intimidating though. It isn't about money or asking people to give. It is about looking to God to provide for you. He has given you a vision for ministry, and now you get to invite others into that vision. Your job is to pray and work hard to discover those whom the Lord has already prepared to invest in you and your ministry. God has done His work. Now it's time for you to do yours.
A case in point: Nehemiah was very nervous about meeting with the wealthiest, most powerful man on the planet. He was asking King Artaxerxes to fund his Jerusalem restoration project. But when it came time to make his appeal, this lowly cupbearer first looked up to the Person who really provides resources. At the moment of truth, Nehemiah lifted his heart and made The God Ask. In Nehemiah 2:4 he describes the exchange: "Then the king said to me, 'What would you request?' So I prayed to the God of heaven."
Instead of going into appointments fearing what your fellow man will say, you can have confidence that God is superintending the whole process. This audiobook will help you embrace the fact that this is not a Man Ask. No. It is a God Ask!

The book is inspiring and certainly helpful for those choosing to get into active support raising, but I have to say that the author's use of some of the bible passages feel a little forced. For example, it is true that Jesus's ministry was somewhat funded by devoted followers. But the bible doesn't give any specifics on how he or his disciples went about this. Were they aggressive about asking for support? Or did they just go about their ministry and people were moved to give without being asked? The author doesn't argue that they were aggressive; however, his contemporary examples throughout the book and main arguments suggest that aggressive asking is the proper way to raise support. I feel the placement of the Jesus example in the book is unfortunate. It should not have been placed after/in the midst of all those contemporary examples. It should have been placed somewhere in the beginning--for people who have issues about "receiving support" (which, to be fair, I think was the author's intention). Why do I suggest this? Simply because, in my experience, fewer missionaries have problems with "receiving support." A lot have with aggressive asking for support (p.s. I don't mean aggressive in a bad sense--just really active support raising). So, it would be better not to confuse the issue. Discuss biblical support for aggressive support raising separately from receiving support. It will then be easy to see that there is not as much biblical foundation for aggressive support raising. Those that are less aggressive or who receive their salary from institutions should not feel guilty. Even the Levites did not "ask." Their portion was God-instituted, and not just in the sense of God-through-people but God-through-law. I hope that makes sense.I like the author's other arguments, namely, that support raising can really help us involve others in the work for God's kingdom.
I appreciate this book a great deal. Jesus said "the harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few", and in today's world, the reason that 90% of those who are deeply interested in missions and support-raised ministry have walked away or given up has been the support raising process. Shadrach's approach is to say: What if we could turn your approach to fundraising around. Instead of being a faith-killing, discouraging and fruitless obsticle to ministry; it could become a faith-building, encouraging and fruitful boost to your ministry? For me, that is what happened. From the point where I understood the foundational message of this book, I was on the mission field with my wife in 6 months. Furthermore, now that my wife and I are both in the ministry, and our true expenses are better known, our budget has now doubled, but I'm not discouraged, I'm confident that the Lord will provide and the principles layed out in this book will help me get there. Praise the Lord!
It was practical, encouraging, motivational and gave great perspective. I would highly, highly recommend this as a must read! It is organized well, and has consistently great content throughout. Highlight this book and then go over it slowly again to let it soak in.I would also recommend, "the little red book of selling" by Jeffrey Gitomer afterwards. It is a secular book, but it gives the nuts and bolts of a true sales person and it is a good companion read.
Conventional wisdom says you can learn things one of two ways - by making your own mistakes or learning from someone else's. I am an experienced pastor recently called to plant a missional church. I was pretty sure I could develop a good plan for raising support and already started when a friend in a parachurch ministry pointed me to this resource. As a result, it confirmed what I was doing right and saved me from some costly mistakes. With most people you will only get one opportunity to seek their support for your ministry. Do it right. Do it in a way that honors God and the work to which God has called you. Do it in a way that draws people into it and builds deep relationships.Theologically, the God Ask is sound. In terms of approach, it is well reasoned and informed by years of experience. It will connect you to good third party resources, too. it is a practical, helpful book. Now, download it and get to work.
all of the staff at the parachurch organization I work for have to read this as part of their fundraising training and it has been life changing and impactful for all of us. I highly recommend this to anyone who is a Christian who is in anyway involved with a parachurch organization, staff volunteer, board, etc.
This book transformed my approach to support raising. It is well written, offers incredible guidance and makes a song Biblical case for support raising. The book is, however, written from a majority culture perspective. It neglects to affirm the reality of many ethnic minority staff. I certainly don't agree with all the author has written, and I'm sure that's just pay with him. Nonetheless, incredibly helpful book that had helped me sell the Lord's guidance in Scripture.
This book is the quintessential book on missionary support raising! I am in the mission field and the information contained within has been priceless! The author begins with your heart before discussing the practicalities of support raising. It is a must read for anyone going into the mission field that is asked to raise support!
Best book on the subject, ever!My wife and I have been in ministry for 13 years and have read many helpful books and attended many trainings on the subject of Ministry Partner Development. This book is hands-down the best resource available, anywhere. I love the broad vision and hope that he starts off with, the firm Biblical foundation that he takes the time to develop, and the nitty-gritty practical application that he develops. I recommend this book for people considering ministry, to help them develop a correct theology of raising support before they every get started, or for people who have been doing this for awhile that need to be transformed by the renewing of their mind on this subject!
