This was required reading for my 11 year old son who hates to read. We each had our own copy so we could both read and then discuss it when done. He really enjoyed this book. He not only finished reading before I did, he couldn't wait for me to finish reading the book so we could talk about. What I like about it most is that the main character who fights for survival is a female.
Dear S.A. Bodeen,I want her to know that “The Raft†was an amazing book. My favorite part of the book is when Robbie freaked out on having to jump out of the plane. My favorite plot of the book is the narrative hook, technical climax, and the falling action. I enjoyed the narrative hook because she introduced Robbie well and gets people wanting to know what goes on in her life. The technical climax is also good because it's the turning point in the story and they is when Robbie is flying and then ends up having to leave the plane so that was a good twist. The character I liked the most was Robbie the main character in the book. She was a very believable character because he was in tough situations. She inspires me because she was a very hardworking person doing all she can in the raft to survive. The author's style was very good because it was adventurous. In the book she puts in tons of irony and one was situational irony were I would know what was going to happen but the characters did not. For example, I knew that she was going to have to jump out of the plane but she didn't. Also, another type of style she used was POV and in the book she used first person point of view showing Robbie's thoughts, feelings, and actions while in the book. Finally, in the book she uses a little personification to show the water and other nonliving things that act like humans. Finally, the theme of this book is to never give up and keep trying. I learned that if you give it your all and try the best you will succeed. The life lesson i got from this story is to keep trying even through the hardest times.By the end of the book, I learned that if you don't give up you will most likely succeed. Thank you for this adventurous book. I hope you created more books like it.Sincerely Ashton Williams,
This was such a good read! It is short so I read it in one day. It is about a girl who gets on a flight and the flight crashes over the ocean and she is trapped on a floatation device and no one knows she is missing until she is found a week later. I didn’t really get into this book at first and then I was just entrapped by the story of wanting to know what happened to her. This was a very quick read, but I was left wanting more.
The Raft tells the story of Robie, a teen from tiny Midway Atoll who, after some ill advised decisions while visiting family in Hawaii, ends up on a cargo plane headed for home one stormy night. As the reader can discern from the cover, the worst happens and the plane pitches into the ocean, and she ends up on a raft adrift somewhere in the Pacific, struggling to survive.Ms. Bodeen is a competent writer - the grammar is fine, the style is fine, and the chapters are divided in a way that makes sense. What can I say? I spent the entire book waiting for it to grab me. As Robie encounters obstacles and the reader is a party to her internal dialogue, it just never clicks. I never developed sympathy for her plight. I never worried if she would overcome. And by the time the book was ending, I felt like we were somehow still stuck in the first movement. I guess I would compare it to a tv movie that you put on when you are folding laundry or wrapping presents. In short - if the price gets drastically reduced - say $2.99 or so, it might be worth it. Otherwise, I'd try something like Enclave by Ann Aguirre or Divergent by Veronica Roth.
One of my biggest fears is being stranded at sea. The idea alone gives me anxiety. So I had to read this and living it through this book confirmed all my fears but with hopefully. Completely sucks you in and gives you hope of what the fight for survival in all of us has that we never knew!
"The Raft" is a book about 15-year-old Robie Mitchell who must stay at her aunt's apartment in Honolulu, Hawaii, until she returns. Her aunt's friend, who is to check on Robie every day while her aunt is away, is not able to do so. Robie seizes the opportunity to be the independent girl she's always wanted to be. Things don't seem to be all sunshine for Robie after a shaking experience on the streets of Honolulu. This sends Robie into panic, bad enough that she boards a plane to Midway Atoll to see her parents. However, something on the plane goes horribly wrong and she is forced onto an inflatable raft in the middle of the ocean with the plane's co-pilot, being the only 2 survivors of the crash. As the days go on, the struggle to survive becomes more and more difficult and Robie begins to see that she is on the verge of utter insanity.Robie is a likable character that is the mirror image of what most of us may be like in this situation. Her panic is realistic and it makes you care about her. You may find yourself rooting for her, as I did, even in the most unlucky of situations. "The Raft" is a real eye-opener as to how lucky we really are with our life. It took me a while to become hooked (taking as long as the street situation for me to get interested), but when I did, I could not put it down. I recommend this book to anyone who likes survival stories with a touch of mystery.
Okay, so I was trying to figure out why I liked this book. On a certain level it was very simple-even at times annoyingly simple. Girl gets in plane crash and has to survive in ocean and on island for 14-ish days and then is rescued-hooray. Simple...really simple...and while it was a very traumatic experience, it wasn't a survival story where the whole shape of a person is changed, cause it all happens just so quickly. But, S.A. Bodeen can write the socks of a story...this book was so compelling...I started reading it and could not put it down until I came to the last page. So there you have it. S.A. Bodeen is a very engaging writer and I salute her for that!
